Hello there,

I have recently upgraded WinXPPro from 98. The IIS server
5.1 didn't seem to be properly installed ( In Control
panel-> Admin tools --> iis, no items are shown when
expanded ), so i went into the Remove Windows components,
and selected REmove of IIS. After logging out and logging
in back again (both times as admin), when i try to
reinstall IIS, with default accessories, the message -

Error WRiting Encrypted Data To The Web Server's
COnfiguration database [Metabase], 0x800900f = Object
already exists appears.

The KB has a couple of articles devoted exclusively to
this error. However, the articles speak of the following
directories to be present :-
. If the Windows installation is an upgrade
navigate to:
%windir%\Profiles\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys
. If the Windows installation is a new installation
navigate to:
%system root%\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys
<<<

Both these directories are _not_ present on the
machine !!!

However, the article(s) further mention another
directory :-
%systemroot%\system32\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys <<<

This directory is present.

Since the article(s) mention renaming the "MachineKeys"
folder as the alternative, and since this folder does not
exist in the desired paths, i am unable to take the route
suggested !

Any body who can throw any light on this subject,
please ! I'll appreciate very much.

Thanks in advance,

Sanjay.

You should follow the KB and make sure those old machine keys are not where
they currently reside.

You should also make sure that the %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\inetsrv directory
is completely removed in-between reinstallations.
