Discussion:
ASPmail dll hangs

Dear fellow IIS admins,

Probably if the nice fellows at ServerObjects were taking their job
more seriously , this post wouldn't have made it here. I must tell, I
tried several times in the
past to reach them but nada, not a tiny little answer. I bought a
piece of software, not so
expensive, but very crucial for my websites. When this module doesn't
work, sites stop to receive orders, forum registrations are crashing
and other nasty things hit you.
I won't be staying long with aspmail and will start moving sites to
Jmail/Aspemail soon, but I have a serious problem today and maybe you
can help:

After few hours of IIS working, processes that use aspmail to send
messages don't make it through. I'm using IISstatus.dll to watch the
processess currently served by IIS and the processess stay there for a
long time, adding more and more and finally crashing IIS. As soon as
the first process stucks, no other processes can send mail through
aspmail. They don't even timeout correctly according to IIS timeout...
The only resolution is to restart IIS. Then magically everything
starts to work again.

Please note, while aspmail (smtpsvg.dll) stucks, I can telnet my mail
server OK and even use Jmail on the server to send mail through other
.

This is not a connectivity error, this dll simply stops working at a
certain level but I can't tell why/where. I can't even relate the
behaviour to a specific site on the machine. Every time it happens,
different scripts are stuck..

I'm on win2k fully patched, iis 5, aspmail 4.1.1

I'm really pulling my hair here for 2 days now on this case and the
most frustrated thing is that serverobject doesn't reply any of my
emails to help solve it.

IF you use your aspmail object on serious production servers I'd
suggest you move to a different model. Once such a scenario hits you
and the company that created the software is not there for you, well,
you know what happens...

Thanks for your help,
Justin

It would not be a hard jub , to move over to CDO on win2000. Not many are
aware but Outlook Express and outlook use CDO for formating the MIME stuff
and for the protocol handling. This component is really very flexible and
reliable (but harder to use than CDONTS)...

Honestly, as you've noted -- the vendor is the only one that can
troubleshoot and debug such problems. You're probably observing some sort
of deadlocking problem, and all we can do are:
1. configure process recycling of some sort (effectively what you do when
you restart IIS)
2. get the stack trace that illustrates that the particular DLL has a
problem

As Egbert notes -- Windows comes with the ability to send email via ASP and
commandline scriptable objects... that are pretty full featured... so you
may not need to pay for any such "system". We take advantage of the
built-in support ourselves to send plain-text and Rich HTML email... so it's
up to you.

Hi,

thanks for your answers.
I know about CDONTS but what we do is shared hosting and webmaster
adopted aspmail a long time ago...
I have about 70 sites on that machine that work with aspmail,
and it would take a lot of time to migrate to AspEmail/Jmail, which I'll
do anyway because of ServerObject's attitude on support, but in the
meantime I can't sit here and restart IIS every 3 hours or so. I'm also
afraid to put a script to restart IIS because 50% of the time it will
need a pretty hard kill before it can be restarted...

thanks,
Justin

You may wish to consider using more modular code (eg if you are using ASP,
then look at using VBScript Classes). That way, your apps can call into the
class, and the class, internally, makes the call to the component. That way
your pages don't need to change, just the internal class code.

Cheers
Ken

in other words, what you're saying is like Qmail's binary for Sendmail
thing?

Good idea and can solve many many hours of code migration but
wouldn't this be a performance hit to load the component from the vb
script each time?

thanks,
Justin

Ken's idea about modularity is a good approach.

You've already taken the perf hit with loading the first ASP page (itself
written in VBScript/JScript); loading an addition script file is trivial
relative to sending an email or making a request. IIS/ASP also aggressively
caches file handles/content (we're not talking about Apache here)...

You're basically arguing about spending 50cents more when you've already
spent $100.

Modularity is one way to insulate one's code from vendor lock-in.

so,

where do I go finding someone to code a VB class/dll that will take the
asp code of my users and translate it to CDO or Jmail?

I'm also posting here the iisstate log when processes working with
smtpsvg.dll startin to stuck. Maybe anyone here knows how to interpret
it.

It's weird, I don't see in the log any calls to smtpsvg.dll but pages
that got stuck and appeared in IISstatus.dll are all related to
smtpsvg.dll...

thanks,
Justin

so,
where do I go finding someone to code a VB class/dll that will take the
asp code of my users and translate it to CDO or Jmail?
I'm also posting here the iisstate log when processes working with
smtpsvg.dll startin to stuck. Maybe anyone here knows how to interpret
it.
It's weird, I don't see in the log any calls to smtpsvg.dll but pages
that got stuck and appeared in IISstatus.dll are all related to
smtpsvg.dll...
Ask me for instance. I think a conversion including testing and fixing (if
needed) is at most a day. I would go for a single static call to a function
that instantiates CDO and send mail.

Justin

Run IISState when your server is actually stuck and ASP pages cannot send
mail. Nothing looks wrong with your log right now.

Hi,
thanks for your answers.
I know about CDONTS but what we do is shared hosting and webmaster
adopted aspmail a long time ago...
Justin, we were -not- talking about CDONTS but about CDO... That's two
different components where CDO is sofisticated and robuste. CDONTS is
limited and obsolete for windows 2000 and 2003.

Hi,
thanks for your answers.
Take my advice, a hard kill on IIS can cause it to become corrupt (the
metabase) You'll safe more time by migrating to a good written COM
component, state of the art (CDO). AspMail is not state of the art, since it
uses MFC and Win98 compatibility (that's my 2 cents on it when I looked at
it)...

Justin,

If your server is crashing or hanging you might want to
download our ReJuvin8 tool. It's free for the first
15-days. It can keep your site running despite problems.

It's designed to detect problems then restart or reboot.
It can restart ANY programs, services, or processes in
precise order. It doesn't fix bugs but it does give you some
breathing room while you are finding them. ReJuvin8 also
gives you email and telephone alert messages and graphic
status reports.

It can also test, alert, and report on URLs running anywhere
on any server on your net connection. So if you use multiple
servers you can use them to watch each other, too.

ReJuvin8 has both an automatic and a custom mode. In the
auto mode you make all the settings by pointing and
clicking. This will handle most applications.

The custom mode uses heartbeat synch files to get absolute
detection that key processes are working. Tools and
instructions are provided to help you do this. We also offer
customization as a contract service.

Charles

Dear fellow IIS admins,
Probably if the nice fellows at ServerObjects were taking their job
more seriously , this post wouldn't have made it here. I must tell, I
tried several times in the
past to reach them but nada, not a tiny little answer. I bought a
piece of software, not so
expensive, but very crucial for my websites. When this module doesn't
work, sites stop to receive orders, forum registrations are crashing
and other nasty things hit you.
I won't be staying long with aspmail and will start moving sites to
Jmail/Aspemail soon, but I have a serious problem today and maybe you
After few hours of IIS working, processes that use aspmail to send
messages don't make it through.
Thanks for your help,
Justin
